Garage Door Opener Not Working? 7 Things to Check First

DPS Garage Doors technician troubleshooting a garage door opener in Ottawa

Before you assume the worst, many opener problems have simple fixes. Run through this checklist — and if the door still won't cooperate, we're here 7 days a week.

1. Check the safety sensors

The small photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side of the door must line up and have a clear path. If the door won't close and the light blinks, wipe the lenses and re-align them until both LEDs are steady.

2. Replace the remote battery

A dead remote battery is the number-one false alarm. Try the wall button — if that works but the remote doesn't, swap the battery before anything else.

3. Confirm the door is on power

  • Check the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power
  • Look for a tripped breaker or GFCI
  • Make sure the wall lock or vacation switch isn't engaged

4-7. When it's more than a quick fix

If the motor hums but the door doesn't move, the gear or trolley may be worn. If nothing happens at all, it could be the logic board, capacitor, or a snapped spring making the door too heavy for the opener. These need a technician. DPS repairs and replaces LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers same-day across the Ottawa region.
