A loud bang from the garage
Torsion springs release their energy all at once when they break. It often sounds like a gunshot or something heavy falling.
Heard a loud bang from the garage and now the door won't lift? That's almost always a broken spring. We replace torsion and extension springs across Ottawa the same day you call, match them to your door's exact weight, and balance the door properly so the new springs last. You get a written quote before we touch anything.
Your opener doesn't lift the garage door. The springs do. A typical double steel door weighs somewhere between 150 and 250 pounds, and the springs are wound to carry nearly all of that weight so the opener, or your arms, only has to guide it.
When a spring snaps, that counterbalance is gone. The door suddenly feels like dead weight, the opener strains or reverses after a few inches, and forcing it can burn out the opener motor or bend the top panel. The safest move is to stop using the door and call us.
Most Ottawa homes built from the 1990s on use torsion springs mounted on a bar above the door. Many older bungalows and detached garages still run extension springs along the horizontal tracks. We service and carry both.

Torsion springs release their energy all at once when they break. It often sounds like a gunshot or something heavy falling.
Look at the spring above the door. A clean 2–3 inch gap between coils means it has snapped.
If you pull the emergency release and the door won't stay up, or you can barely lift it, the springs are no longer carrying the weight.
Many openers are programmed to stop and reverse when the load is too heavy, which is exactly what a broken spring creates.
One failed spring on a two-spring door makes one side lift unevenly and can throw a cable off its drum.
When spring tension disappears, the lift cables lose tension too and can unwind from the drums.
We confirm the spring is the problem, check cables, drums, bearings and rollers, and give you a written quote before any work starts.
Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction are matched to your door's actual weight and height, so the new springs are sized correctly and not just copied from whatever was there.
On two-spring doors we replace both. The second spring has the same number of cycles on it and usually fails soon after the first.
We set the tension so the door stays put when stopped halfway, then run the opener's force and auto-reverse safety tests.
Springs, bearings, rollers and hinges get lubricated and the hardware is tightened, so the whole door runs quieter.
A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break bones. Most serious garage door injuries happen during DIY spring work, usually when a winding bar slips or the wrong tool is used.
Online videos make it look simple, but the risk comes from the details: correct winding direction, the right number of turns for your door height, and set screws tightened to the right torque. Get any of those wrong and the door can drop or the spring can spin loose.
If your spring is broken, leave the door closed, unplug the opener if the door is stuck partway, and call us. We'll make it safe and get it working the same day.
