The door hangs crooked
One side is higher than the other, usually because a cable has slipped off its drum or snapped.
A frayed or snapped cable, a cable that has come off its drum, or a door that has jumped its tracks can leave your garage door hanging crooked and unsafe to use. We repair cables, rollers and tracks across Ottawa the same day, and we fix the cause so the problem doesn't come back.
Your garage door's lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the spring shaft. As the springs turn, the cables wind onto the drums and lift the door evenly on both sides. Rollers keep the door riding smoothly inside the tracks.
When one part fails, the others take the strain. A worn roller can bind in the track, a bent track can pop a roller out, and a sudden jolt can throw a cable off its drum. The result is a door that lifts unevenly, hangs crooked, or comes off its tracks.
Because cables are connected to high-tension springs, cable work needs to be done carefully and with the tension properly released. It's a job for a trained technician.

Broken strands near the bottom brackets mean the cable is close to failing.
The door looks twisted, or rollers are visibly outside the track.
Worn, cracked or seized rollers drag in the track instead of rolling.
Often caused by a vehicle bump, and it can push rollers out as the door moves.
Uneven cable tension or binding rollers make the door move roughly.
We clamp and support the door so it can't move, and release spring tension safely.
Cables, drums, bottom brackets, rollers, hinges, tracks and springs are all checked, because one failure usually has a cause.
New cables are fitted to both sides so they wear evenly and the door lifts level.
Bent sections are replaced, tracks are re-aligned and brackets are tightened.
Spring tension is reset, the door is balanced, and we test the opener and safety reverse.
Moisture and road salt carried in on cars speed up rust on the bottom brackets and the lower end of the cables, which is where most cables fray and break.
A spring that has lost tension or broken lets the cable go slack, and a slack cable easily jumps off its drum the next time the door moves.
Worn rollers and loose track bolts let the door twist slightly as it moves. Over time that uneven movement strains one cable more than the other. A yearly tune-up catches most of these problems early.
