What Springs Do

Why a Broken Spring Stops Everything

Your opener doesn't lift the garage door. The springs do. A typical double steel door weighs somewhere between 150 and 250 pounds, and the springs are wound to carry nearly all of that weight so the opener, or your arms, only has to guide it.

When a spring snaps, that counterbalance is gone. The door suddenly feels like dead weight, the opener strains or reverses after a few inches, and forcing it can burn out the opener motor or bend the top panel. The safest move is to stop using the door and call us.

Most Ottawa homes built from the 1990s on use torsion springs mounted on a bar above the door. Many older bungalows and detached garages still run extension springs along the horizontal tracks. We service and carry both.

What to Look For

Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken or Failing

A loud bang from the garage

Torsion springs release their energy all at once when they break. It often sounds like a gunshot or something heavy falling.

A visible gap in the spring coil

Look at the spring above the door. A clean 2–3 inch gap between coils means it has snapped.

The door is suddenly very heavy

If you pull the emergency release and the door won't stay up, or you can barely lift it, the springs are no longer carrying the weight.

The opener hums but the door barely moves

Many openers are programmed to stop and reverse when the load is too heavy, which is exactly what a broken spring creates.

The door rises crooked or jerks

One failed spring on a two-spring door makes one side lift unevenly and can throw a cable off its drum.

Loose or tangled cables

When spring tension disappears, the lift cables lose tension too and can unwind from the drums.

Our Process

How We Replace Garage Door Springs

1

Diagnose and quote

We confirm the spring is the problem, check cables, drums, bearings and rollers, and give you a written quote before any work starts.

2

Measure the door, not just the spring

Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction are matched to your door's actual weight and height, so the new springs are sized correctly and not just copied from whatever was there.

3

Replace in pairs

On two-spring doors we replace both. The second spring has the same number of cycles on it and usually fails soon after the first.

4

Wind, balance and test

We set the tension so the door stays put when stopped halfway, then run the opener's force and auto-reverse safety tests.

5

Lubricate and tune

Springs, bearings, rollers and hinges get lubricated and the hardware is tightened, so the whole door runs quieter.

Why DPS

Why Ottawa Homeowners Call DPS for Springs

  • Same-day service — open 7 days a week, 7am–8pm, with vans stocked with the spring sizes common on Ottawa doors
  • High-cycle spring options — standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles; we can fit longer-life springs if your door gets heavy daily use
  • Written quote first — the number we quote is the number you pay
  • Warranty in writing — parts and workmanship are backed in writing
  • Licensed and insured — torsion springs store a lot of energy, and this is not a job to hand to someone uninsured
Good to Know

Why You Shouldn't Replace Torsion Springs Yourself

A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break bones. Most serious garage door injuries happen during DIY spring work, usually when a winding bar slips or the wrong tool is used.

Online videos make it look simple, but the risk comes from the details: correct winding direction, the right number of turns for your door height, and set screws tightened to the right torque. Get any of those wrong and the door can drop or the spring can spin loose.

If your spring is broken, leave the door closed, unplug the opener if the door is stuck partway, and call us. We'll make it safe and get it working the same day.

FAQ

Spring Repair Questions from Ottawa Homeowners

Call (613) 884-1488. We answer 7 days a week, 7am–8pm.

How fast can you replace a broken garage door spring in Ottawa?
Same-day service is our default. We're open 7 days a week from 7am to 8pm, and our vans carry the spring sizes most common on Ottawa doors, so most spring jobs are finished in a single visit.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
Yes, on a two-spring door. Both springs were installed at the same time and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one is usually close to failing. Replacing both keeps the door balanced and saves you a second service call.
How long do garage door springs last?
Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which is roughly 7 to 10 years for a typical family. Doors used many times a day wear out faster. We can install high-cycle springs rated for much longer if you want fewer replacements.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
We don't recommend it. Without spring tension the door is extremely heavy, and forcing it with the opener can damage the motor, strip gears or bend panels. If your car is trapped, call us and we'll walk you through the safest option.
How much does garage door spring replacement cost?
It depends on your door's size and weight, the spring type, and whether you choose standard or high-cycle springs. We measure your door and give you a firm written quote before any work starts, and there's no premium for evenings or weekends.
Do you replace extension springs as well as torsion springs?
Yes. Many older Ottawa bungalows and detached garages still use extension springs. We replace them, add safety cables if they're missing, and can convert a door to a torsion system if that suits it better.
