Garage Door Safety Sensor Problems and Fixes

If your garage door reverses right before closing, or won't close at all while the light on the sensor blinks, the photo-eye safety sensors are almost always the culprit. Here's how to fix the most common causes yourself before calling for help.

What the sensors actually do

Every garage door opener made since the mid-1990s includes a pair of photo-eye sensors mounted a few inches off the ground on either side of the door track, aimed at each other to form an invisible infrared beam. If anything breaks that beam while the door is closing — a person, a pet, a stray hockey stick left leaning against the frame — the door immediately reverses. It's a genuinely important safety feature, not a nuisance to work around.

The most common sensor problems, in order of likelihood

  1. Misalignment. The single most common cause. If the two sensors aren't pointed precisely at each other, the beam breaks intermittently or entirely, and the door won't close or reverses unexpectedly. Even a light bump from a broom handle or a stored bike can knock a sensor out of alignment.
  2. Dirty or obstructed lenses. Dust, cobwebs, or a film of grime on the sensor lens can weaken the beam enough to cause false triggers, especially over months of a garage collecting dust.
  3. Direct sunlight interference. Low winter sun angling straight down a driveway into the garage can overwhelm the infrared receiver. Very common in Ottawa during late fall and winter months when the sun sits low on the horizon for longer stretches of the day.
  4. Loose or damaged wiring. Wiring that's been nicked, chewed by rodents, or simply come loose at a connection point will cause intermittent or complete sensor failure.

How to fix it yourself, step by step

  1. Check the indicator lights. Most sensors have a small LED that glows solid when properly aligned and blinks or goes dark when the beam is broken or misaligned.
  2. Wipe both lenses clean with a soft, dry cloth — dust and grime buildup is a surprisingly common cause.
  3. Check physical alignment. Both sensors should be at the same height on each side of the door and pointed directly at each other. Loosen the wing nut or mounting screw slightly and adjust until the indicator light goes solid.
  4. Block direct sunlight if that's the issue — a simple cardboard shield or slight downward angle adjustment on the sensor usually resolves it.
  5. Inspect the wiring for any visible damage, loose connections at the sensor or opener unit, or signs of rodent activity.
  6. Test the door through a full close cycle once you've made adjustments.

If you've cleaned and realigned the sensors and the problem persists, the issue may be a failed sensor, damaged wiring inside the wall or conduit, or a problem with the opener's control board rather than the sensors themselves. A step-by-step alignment technique that actually works

If the LED indicator on your sensors won't go solid no matter how you nudge them, try this more methodical approach: loosen the wing nut on one sensor fully so it can move freely, then slowly sweep it up and down and side to side while watching the indicator light on the opposite sensor. There's often a narrow but genuine "sweet spot" where the light snaps solid — once you find it, tighten the wing nut carefully without shifting the sensor. Repeat on the other side only if needed; usually just one sensor has drifted out of position.

Rodents and pests: an underrated cause

Garages, especially in fall and winter, are attractive shelter for mice and other small pests looking for warmth. Wiring running along the floor or up the door frame to the sensors is occasionally chewed, which causes intermittent or total sensor failure that looks electrical but is actually pest damage. If you've ruled out alignment, dirt, and sunlight, a visual check of the wiring's full length — not just at the sensor itself — is worth doing before assuming the sensor unit itself has failed.

If sensors are malfunctioning, the right fix is repair or replacement, not disconnection — and any technician who suggests otherwise isn't doing you a favour.

Testing your sensors properly, not just visually

The door should stop and reverse immediately on contact. Sensors are required by safety standards to be mounted no more than about 6 inches above the floor on both sides of the door opening. Older opener systems, particularly those installed before the mid-1990s, may not have photo-eye safety sensors at all, relying instead purely on a mechanical force-sensing reversal system.
